Ayurvedic medicine is the world's oldest holistic healing system. It has been used for over 5,000 years to cleanse and restore balance to the body and mind.
Ayurveda is successful in treating a wide range of conditions, including: skin conditions, painful and heavy menstruation, menopause symptoms, digestive complaints, weight loss, stress and anxiety.
Jessica Sherlock is a qualified therapist trained by one of the foremost Ayurvedic practitioners in Europe, Dr Deepa Rodriguez.
Through a private one-to-one consultation, Jessica will develop your personalised Ayurvedic treatment plan, including nutrition, lifestyle and herbs, to cleanse, balance and restore your health and wellbeing.
Ayurveda: Find out your unique constitution – By Jessica Sherlock
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old healing system that works by eliminating the root cause of disease as well as providing immediate relief of symptoms. Ayurveda uses a range of diagnostic methods (such as tongue, pulse, skin) to identify which “dosha” (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) is imbalanced and then prescribes a unique treatment plan for the individual, using diet, lifestyle changes and herbs.
In Ayurveda each individual has a unique constitution made up of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Because of this there is no “one size fits all” approach to treating illness and maintaining good health is a matter of understanding your constitution.
Is this you?
Vata – you are always on the go, with a creative mind. You tend to have a thin light frame and agility. You are prone to bursts of energy and fatigue. You love excitement and take initiative. Balanced you are creative and flexible. Unbalanced you suffer from anxiety, poor sleep, and self-blame.
Pitta – you are passionate and energetic, with a medium build and enjoy luxuries. You have the ability to focus and a strong intellect. In balance you make a strong leader and decision maker. Out of balance you are short-tempered and aggressive.
Kapha – you have a strong build, excellent stamina and are naturally calm and loving. When in balance you have an inherent ability to enjoy life. Out of balance you have emotional issues and find it difficult to let go.
“After around three months the skin condition almost completely cleared up, I’d say a 90% improvement. I’m now able to re-introduce the foods which I most enjoy but I keep an eye out not to consume too much of the things I now know aggravate my skin condition"
John, Social Enterprise Director, London
“For ten years I suffered with severe migraines and fatigue as well as other issues- when…I haven't been off work sick for ages, I very rarely get migraines anymore and the other symptoms are clearing up as well. I really recommend her (Jessica), she will encourage you when you feel like giving up and takes the whole journey seriously, which is refreshing after many a failed attempt with the NHS”
Sheona, Charity Manager, London
"We could see a difference in the severity of his condition [baby eczema] after a couple of weeks. I also generally felt more balanced myself... It's worth giving Ayurveda a go, and Jess is wonderful person to take you through it”
Sally, Finance Director, London
“The next day (following the massage) I woke up feeling extremely grounded and relaxed all day and even a week later felt that there was a groundedness that I still could feel as a result of the massage. My whole body felt deeply nourished by the oils and I loved the smell of the oils”.
Penelope, Baby Massage Teacher, London
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CONSULTATION
An initial consultation lasts one hour and uses a range of diagnostic methods such as pulse, tongue, etc. It also includes extensive discussion of a person's medical history and current lifestyle, for example, favourite foods, exercise, relationships, work and home life. During this time the person’s unique constitution and the “imbalance” that is causing illness will be diagnosed.
Following a consultation, a bespoke treatment plan is given to the patient which involves the use of dietary and lifestyle changes and herbs. Follow-up appointments usually take place after 2-3 weeks. The length of the treatment depends on factors such as how the illness has developed and the type of support needed by the individual to incorporate healing changes into their life.
Ayurveda massage has numerous benefits: it removes aches and pains, relaxes the muscles and nerves, it is anti-aging, helps to detox the body, stimulates resistance to disease, promotes a deeper breathing pattern, induces deep sleep, aids healthy digestion, strengthens the skin and makes life more joyful.
Ayurvedic full body massage involves massage of the whole body, scalp and face using abhyanga, a set of specialized techniques: tapping, cupping, rubbing, squeezing, kneading with warm oil. Therapeutic oils are selected according to the constitution of the individual and any imbalance in their doshas. The Marma points are stimulated through gentle pressure to over 100 energy nodes all over the body that tap into the energy channels and mind-body connections. Pinda Sweda, hot poultices made with herbs and rice are used to deeply relax the muscles and reduce aches and pains.
Several years ago I suffered from IBS and tried a range of treatments which were unsuccessful. I was drawn to Ayurveda as it shares the same roots as Yoga and stumbled upon Dr Deepika Rodrigo’s highly successful practice in South London. After three months of treatment, I was so relieved to feel well again and this experience inspired me to train to become a practitioner, leaving behind my 15 year long career in the field of environmental sustainability.
Some of those I’ve treated would not have tried an alternative health system like Ayurveda if it weren’t for me and were quite sceptical about the scientific basis for the treatment, however, seeing the benefits first hand they are now converts too!
Ayurveda is not widely known about in the UK and I’m thrilled to be working with Dr Deepika and the Ayurveda Institute UK to grow the practice within London.
