Good sleep is one of the cornerstones of health. Poor sleep dramatically increases our risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s, as well as our risk of mental illness. Sleep well, and our health improves, we benefit more from exercise, we look better, and our mood lifts. Our productivity increases, we make better decision, and we tend to earn more.
What do I do?
I’ll work with you to understand and overcome difficulties in sleeping, whether these take the form of not being able to fall asleep, waking in the night, or poor daytime energy. I am very practical, and I can make difficult things easy. We’ll cover nutrition, lifestyle, electromagnetic interference, useful and unuseful tech, effects of medication. We’ll monitor your sleep quality over time, if you wish.
Why come and see me?
I get results. Not just when sleep is suddenly disturbed, perhaps by shock or trauma, but also with chronic insomnia. Most sleep specialists regard chronic insomnia that has lasted for three months or more as “unrelenting” (Professor Jason Ellis, Head of the Sleep Research Centre, Northumbria). I don’t. Using a variety of means, including the Zeez Sleep Pebble, we have substantially improved the sleep of almost 80% of chronic insomniacs, including people who hadn’t slept properly for decades, and people with conditions that may be exacerbated by poor sleep such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, Parkinson’s, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, depression and anxiety.
I was an insomniac from childhood, and became expert on sleep partly through studying, over decades, what might improve my own dreadful nights. An intellectual property lawyer, I litigated huge cases involving medicines and science. With enough stress, rigorous deadlines, I could keep going. But I couldn’t sit through a play or read a story to my children without dosing off. Yet a night with five hours sleep was a rare victory. And then I met electronics engineer Steve Walpole, a man who was involved with many cutting edge technologies and had worked with a string of interesting doctors and scientists – Jacques Benveniste, Lief Salford, Patrick Kingsley, Cyril Smith and many others. Together, we studied sleep: measured brainwaves, experimented, learnt what worked nutritionally and in relation to lifestyle, and eventually developed the Zeez Sleep Pebble, trialed at Coventry and Plymouth universities, and at Champneys, amongst staff, as well as with hundreds of individuals. I kept being asked to talk about sleep, worked with elite sportsmen, and realized that I had become an expert..
What to expect from our consultation
I will ask you to complete a sleep questionnaire before your consultation.
First appointment (50 minutes) – we will consider all aspects of your sleep and how it is affected by your lifestyle and diet. And we will look at how you can change it to improve your sleep.
I may recommend tests from your GP or another health consultant. Occasionally, it may be useful to monitor your sleeping environment for electromagnetic interference.
Follow-ups (30mins) – to review your progress and tweak recommendations.
